It's That Time of the Year

Things are starting to get crazy!! The students put on a WONDERFUL Christmas program last Tuesday-they sure put me in the holiday spirit!! We've been working on various holiday items(including presents for our parents that are a big secret). The class learned about St. Nicholas, and the true meaning of the candy cane. Of course we're still working on the normal things too, Geometry in Math, the continents and oceans in Social Studies, and we'll be doing lots of learning about Reindeer and Caribou this week! Big thanks to Mr. Puthoff and Mrs. Cravero for the flashcard help these last couple weeks and Mrs. Shaft for coming in even though we had Mass and she wasn't needed! You're all a huge help!!

November Already

Welcome to November everyone! Before we know it we'll be getting those shovels out--oh no!!  2B has started November off with learning about the Pilgrims and the Mayflower. On Friday the students worked on mosaic boy and girl pilgrims. I hope to display them on the large bulletin board in the hall. We are all anxious to present Mass on Wednesday--I hope you can join us!! Special thanks to Mr. Puthoff for flashcards again this week!! All those volunteers are paying off--we had 2 students move to subtraction this week!! Yay!!

That Time of the Year

Well, here I am again writing later than I planned on--sorry. I've been a bit under the weather, as have some of the kids in the class. I guess it's kleenex and germ-x time of the year!! We're celebrating Red Ribbon Week this week. This year it's not just saying no to Drugs and Alcohol, but saying yes to Healthier Habits! Of course we'll be having our annual Halloween party on Friday. I always love to see what costumes the students come up with! We all know they will have a great time eating, playing games, and making some crafts! Thanks to all of the great parents that have been coming in to help with things and that are helping and donating items for the Halloween party--you're all WONDERFUL!! Have a safe Halloween everyone!

Time Flies

First, my apologies for not posting for so long. It sure is a busy time of the year and the blog was the one thing that I let slip by. It's hard to believe that we are now into the second semester of school! The leaves are falling and the students have gotten well into the second grade curriculum. We've been studying nocturnal animals, including owls, worms, and this week bats. Sooner than not it will be Halloween and we'll all be dressing up. I'd love to say that I know what I'm going to be, like all the students do, but frankly I have no idea!! At least I have some time. We've started working in small novel groups and you should see your student bringing home a book to read off and on. It's amazing to see them get into these books and have such great discussions. There are various parents that have been in to help with flashcards since I posted last, but one I know I haven't thanked before is Mrs. Rolf--so thanks to her and all those others that help out so much! Hope to get back to posting more regularly! Have a great week everyone!

It's October!!

Well, it's October already and the trees are becoming beautiful. We're well into the school year and the students are settling in. It was nice to talk with so many parents last week and have such good conversations about the students. If your child didn't tell you, we made applesauce onFriday to wrap up our apple unit. I believe the class liked it--or at least I got that impression from all the Mmmmm! We'll be moving on to worms, owls and nocturnal animals. Thanks to Mrs. Shaft for flashcards this week!! The students are all progressing well on their facts--much of it due to the great practice they get with volunteers!

Conferences, Book Fair and October, Oh My!

Yes, that's right it's already time for parent-teacher conferences. That means we're six weeks into school--wow!! I'm so looking forward to talking with each of you about your child's growth!
This week also brings the Book Fair. It's sure to be a HUGE hit with the students. It will be open during conferences for those that want to surprise their student(s) with a good book or two!! If you don't have a chance to hit the Book Fair; your student will have the chance to buy on Wednesday. We'll be checking it out on Monday and they will bring home their "Wish List".
October is almost here--Oh My!! We'll be switching gears soon from Apples to Bats, Worms, Insects and Nocturnal Animals!! Pretty appropriate for the month of October!!
Thanks again this week to Mr. Puthoff for coming in for flashcards! It's nice for the kids to see a familiar face so often!! THANKS!

Work, Work, and More Work

My apologies for not writing in a while--we've been busy. We started our Voweletics spelling this week. I have to say that there's a lot to it and the students are doing really well--maybe better than me!! Earlier this week we welcomed Miss Abby to our class. She is a St. Ambrose student that will be spending time observing and helping out in our class. It's always great to have an extra set of hands in the room and she's already a hit with the class!!  A HUGE thanks to Mr. Puthoff, Mrs. Shaft and Mrs. Cravero for pitching in with flashcards this week!!

Short Week

It's been a fast, short week but we've covered a lot of territory. I've read some silly stories written by the class. Some involved spiders and monkeys becoming friends, birds losing their eggs, and a pig swimming! The students are putting on finishing touches and will be illustrating their stories. We've started our Apple theme and will be doing some apple tasting soon--MMMM! We hope to make some applesauce and apple pigs too!! (I'll try to post a picture of these--they are so cute) Next week we'll start our Voweletics based spelling. This is new to me and I'm sure that the students will teach me as much as I'll be teaching them!! A big THANKS to Mrs. Shaft who came in and did some flashcards with the kids!! Thank you!

Its September--Already?

Yes, it is September--and the temperature is cooling off--yay!! Maybe we can finally shut off the a/c and try out those new windows!! We had a good week. The students were as quiet as a mouse today at lunch when the lights went out--now we just have to keep that going! We're still working on our silly stories. I hope to have some to share with you next week. I hope everyone has a great long weekend--Happy Labor Day to eveyone--we all deserve a day off!!

What To Write About

That is the question of the week. The students are working on prewriting for their silly stories. I can't wait to have them write them and see what they come up with. The stories are sure to be good and silly! We played our first game of "Around the World" today--that was quite a trip!! The class was very excited about it (to say the least)--we'll see when we have time to do it again. Off to Mass again tomorrow and an early out. The weeks sure are starting to fly by!

Two Weeks Down!

Where is the time going? It's hard to believe that we have two full weeks of school completed. The students are doing a GREAT job coming in in the morning and getting themselves settled! They are such pros!! We've been working hard on being "bucket fillers"--aka doing nice things for others. We've started to read silly stories and the students really relate to them! I'm sure week three of school will be filled with many more great happenings!

Getting In The Swing

We've made it to the second week!! The students are doing well getting into the the swing of things. They have gotten the morning routine down and settle in pretty well. We're still working on the closing of the day--it's hard to stay focused when you're ready to go home! I've enjoyed listening to them all read and I continue to learn more about each of them. It's fun to see each of their personalities begin to come out. I'm looking forward to another great Mass tomorrow with some more good behavior!

Off To A Great Start!

We are off to a great start in 2B!! We've established the classroom rules of: 1. Respect Others, 2. Follow Directions, 3. Raise Your Hand When Others Are Talking.  We are working on routine and beginning to get into the flow of things. Students will have homework on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. I've been learning so much about the children--they are quite a class!! Lots of fun!! We'll experience Mass together tomorrow for the first time. Check here often for various updates--I hope to get on a regular schedule with blogging, but I'm not sure what it will be!
